 Wakulla County

The name “Wakulla” is believed to be of Native American origin, perhaps meaning “spring of water”. Another theory holds that the name comes from a Creek word meaning “loon.” Yet, the most popular interpretation of Wakulla is “mysterious waters.” Today, Wakulla is still home to beautiful springs along with other breathtaking natural attractions, charming communities, and an assortment of activities for visitors.

Wakulla County is Florida's'natural place to be' with untouched natural beauties and historic sites that tell the stories of Florida's past. Fort San Marcos, built in 1679, positioned strategically where the St. Marks and Wakulla Rivers meet, shows the life of its many occupants from the Spanish to Indians and even the U.S. and confederate troops. The historic Sopchoppy Depot shares the tale of early 1900s travelers as the only remaining depot still standing in Florida on the G F & A Railroad. Wakulla's 1842 lighthouse whose flame has stayed lit since the Battle of Natural Bridge has guided many fishers who provide for the local community, which has been passed down and explains the great quality fresh seafood that can be found in Wakulla today.

These historic places take guests through a journey of Florida history. From its museums and historic sites to it natural scenic landscapes Wakulla transports visitors back in time through the making of a beautiful, natural Florida.
